Easy DIY Chalkboards with Chalkboard Paint

Using chalkboard paint is an easy way to create your own chalkboard in any shape you desire!

With a roller and some of our paint, it takes seconds to transform your desired surface into a platform for your artistic designs, shopping list, or anything else you can think of!

Read our article on how easy it is to apply the paint or check out the video here.

It’s not just the paint you have to think about though, getting a cheap or free surface to use chalkboard paint on is just as important.

Rainbow’s chalkboard paint can be used on surfaces such as metal or wood without any need for a coat of primer, which means that just three coats will give you the perfect surface to write your messages on.

Unless you’re really into your metal, the material not music, we’d suggest using wood as it’s much easier to work with.

Getting Your Materials

Taking a trip to your local timber yard is the easiest and best way to source some good wood but you can also do this for free if you’re looking to do it on the cheap.

Wooden shipping pallets are a great source of free wood but come with a lot of effort and some potential risks. For example, these pallets could have shipped some pretty dangerous chemicals or pesticides around the world. They might look fine at first glance but could be potentially hazardous. They could even be infested with termites, so if you are going to use them, make sure you get the pallets from somewhere you can ask about their history!

In general, unless you’re a seasoned DIY expert then we’d suggest buying your own wood from a timber yard or using an old wooden chopping board or table top.

Safer, quicker, easier.

Design your chalkboard paint surface

When you have your wood, it’s up to you how you design your new chalkboard so that it can perform the function you require it for.

Chalkboard paint calendars

Typical chalkboards are often square or rectangular, but yours doesn’t have to be the same! Wooden boards can be cut into fun shapes for children such as dragons and pirate ships or, if you want a stylish addition to your kitchen, perhaps a heart shape? The options are pretty limitless, just make sure you get a competent adult to do the cutting when you’ve drawn on your design.

Then, all you need to do it sand off the edges and paint it with Rainbow Chalkboard Paint!

Use the right chalk markers

When it has thoroughly dried, you can use Rainbow Chalk Markers to get a much cleaner finish than traditional pieces of chalk. They’re non-toxic and water based so children can use them, though obviously not without adult supervision.

To get your chalkboard paint and chalk markers just select the ones you want from the product boxes below or check out our chalkboard paint and chalk marker pages!
